Architecture of Mesoscale Networks in the Primate Brain with Dr. Anna W. Roe

We had the pleasure to receive Dr. Anna W. Roe (New York University Grossman School of Medicine & Nathan Kline Institute for Psychiatric Research) for the monthly seminar of the Neurotech Center.
In her fascinating talk, Anna presented her team’s latest work on the architecture of mesoscale networks in the primate brain. By developing new methods to stimulate single submillimeter functional nodes in macaque cortical and subcortical sites, her team is able to map the networks activated by individual nodes, from the local scale to the whole brain.
Her results revealed that these mesoscale networks are topographic, specific, and sparse, while also pointing to canonical intra-areal and inter-areal micro-network basis vectors. The talk highlighted the broader implications of this work for neuroscience, medicine, engineering, and AI, and sparked a rich discussion with our audience about the organization and function of neural networks!
